Problems on Trains Online Test Part - 10

Exam Name - Quantitative Aptitude
Subject Name - Problems on Trains
Exam Type - Multiple Choice Questions
No Of Questions - 10

Question - 1:How many seconds will a 500 metre long train take to cross a man walking with a speed of 3 krn/hr in the direction of the moving train if the speed of the train is 63 km/hr ? ?
  1. 25
  2. 30
  3. 40
  4. 45
Show/Hide Answer
Answer = B - 30
Explanation: Speed of train relatively to man = ( 63 - 3)km/hr
= 60 km /hr
= (60 x 5 / 18)m/sec
= (50 /3) m/sec
Time taken to pass the man = (500 x 3 / 50)sec
= 30 sec.
Question - 2:Two stations A and B are 110 km apart on a straight line. One train starts from A at 7 a.m. and travels towards B at 20 kmph. Another train starts from B at 8 a.m. and travels towards A at a speed of 25 kmph. At what time will they meet??
  1. 9 a.m.
  2. 10 a.m.
  3. 10.30 a.m.
  4. 11 a.m.
Show/Hide Answer
Answer = B - 10 a.m.
Explanation: No Explanation
Question - 3:Two trains 200 m and 150 m long are running on parallel rails at the rate of 40 kmph and 45 kmph respectively. In how much time will they cross each other, if they are running in the same direction ? ?
  1. 72 sec
  2. 132 sec
  3. 192 sec
  4. 252 sec
Show/Hide Answer
Answer = D - 252 sec
Explanation: Relative Speed = (45 - 40 ) Kmph
= 5 kmph
=(5 x 5 / 18)m/sec
= (25 / 18 ) m/sec
Time taken = (350 x 18 / 25) sec
= 252 sec.
Question - 4:Two, trains, one from Howrah to Patna and the other from Patna to Howrah, start simultaneously. After they meet, the trains reach their destinations after 9 hours and 16 hours respectively. The ratio of their speeds is:?
  1. 2 : 3
  2. 4 : 3
  3. 6 : 7
  4. 9 : 16
Show/Hide Answer
Answer = B - 4 : 3
Explanation: No Explanation
Question - 5:30. A train 110 m long passes a man, running at 6 kmph in the direction opposite to that of the train, in 6 seconds The speed of the train is ?
  1. 54 km/hr
  2. 60 km/hr
  3. 66 km/hr
  4. 72 km/hr
Show/Hide Answer
Answer = B - 60 km/hr
Explanation: No Explanation
Question - 6: At 10 a.m. two trains started traveling toward each other from stations 287 miles apart. They passed each other at 1:30 p.m. the same day. If the average speed of the faster train exceeded the average speed of the slower train by 6 miles per hour, which of the following represents the speed of the faster train, in miles per hour?
  1. 38
  2. 40
  3. 44
  4. 48
Show/Hide Answer
Answer = C - 44
Explanation: If s is speed of faster train, then
3.5*s +3.5*(s-6) =287
solving it, we get
s=44 mph
Question - 7:Two trains in the same direction at 50 & 32 kmph respectively. A man in the slower train observes the 15 seconds elapse before the faster train completely passes him.
What is the length of faster train ??

  1. 72
  2. 73
  3. 74
  4. 75
Show/Hide Answer
Answer = D - 75
Explanation: D= T*S=15*(50-32)*5/18=75m
Question - 8:Two trains from the points A and B moving in opposite direction, at the point they meet the second train travels 120 kms more than the first train. The speeds of the trains are 50kmph and 60kmph respectively. Find the distance between points A and B??
  1. 1310
  2. 1320
  3. 1330
  4. 1340
Show/Hide Answer
Answer = B - 1320
Explanation: suppose first train travelled the distance x
then second train will travel the distance x+120
they met each other after t time
so ((x+120)/60)=(x/50)
x=600
but the between two point is x+x+120
=2x+120
=2*600+120
=1320 km
Question - 9:Two trains, 200 and 160 meters long take a minute to cross each other while traveling in the same direction and take only 10 seconds when they cross in opposite directions. What are the speeds at which the trains are traveling??
  1. 21 m/s; 15 m/s
  2. 30 m/s; 24 m/s
  3. 18 m/s; 27 m/s
  4. 15 m/s; 24 m/s
Show/Hide Answer
Answer = D - 15 m/s; 24 m/s
Explanation: In the same direction the equation is
(200+160)/V1-V2=60s, so V1-V2=6 ( V1 and V2 are the respective velocities)
In the Opposite direction the equation is
(200+160)/(V1+V2)=10s, so V1+v2=36
Solving, V1=21m/s and V2=15m/s
Question - 10:Two trains, each 100 m long, moving in opposite directions, cross each other in 8 seconds. If one is moving twice as fast the other, then the speed of the faster train is:?
  1. 30
  2. 45
  3. 60
  4. 75
Show/Hide Answer
Answer = C - 60km/Hr
Explanation: Let the speed of the slower train be x
and the faster train = 2x
Relative speed = x+2x = 3x
therefore (100+100)/8 = 3x
=> x = 25/3
So, Speed of the faster train = 2(25/3) = 50/3 m/s = (50/3*18/5)km/hr = 60km/hr
